Two Equals And One Wins

Two women walk into the same room. They have the same qualifications, same results behind them, and same offer on the table. One walks out with a client, and the other walks out replaying the whole conversation, wondering what did she do wrong? Here's what almost no one will tell her. The thing that separated them was trust. And trust gets decided faster and earlier than any of us is comfortable to admit. I'm Dr. Rena Sabra, and this is Enrich. Welcome back. Last week I told you the version of you that blends in is the version that the market forgets. Today we will go one level deeper into the thing that actually moves a person from interested to committed, and that is trust. We talk about trust like it's a feeling that either happens or it does not. Something soft and unpredictable that we cannot really control. But that's not true. Trust has an architecture. It's built in a specific order on specific foundations. And once you can see them, you can build it on purpose into your business. That is what I'm gonna give you today. And you're going to want to hold each one up against your own business as we go, not just nod along and forget it by tomorrow. So pause this and press play again when you are ready. Pillar number one. People decide whether to trust you before they decide whether you are any good. Let me give you the science

Pillar One Warmth Before Competence

because this one is just honestly the foundation and everything else sits on it. In 2007, Susan Fisk and her colleagues at Princeton published a paper showing that human beings judge each other on two dimensions and almost always in the same order. The first is warmth, and the second is competence. So warmth and then competence. Warmth answers the oldest question the brain ever asks about another person. Are you a friend or a foe? Do you intend me well or harm? Competence answers the second question. Can you actually deliver? And here's the part that matters for your business the most. We evaluate warmth first, in an instant before competence has even entered the room. It is a survival wiring. It's human instinct. For most of human history, working out whether the stranger in front of you meant you harm was far more urgent and important than deciding whether they were skilled. Now let's bring that into how you present your work. Most accomplished women lead with competence. The qualifications, the results, the track record, the logos on the wall, all of that. It's the thing that we are proudest of and the thing we reach for first. But you are answering the second question, while your buyer is still asking herself the first question. She's still deciding whether you are for her, whether you understand her, whether she is safe with you. And until that question is settled, your competence barely registers. The most qualified woman in the room loses to the one who made the room feel understood. That's it. So here's your move. And it does not ask you to bury your expertise. But let warmth go first. Show that you understand her before you show her how good you are. Name her problem before you name your method. Make her feel seen and then let your competence confirm that her gut has already decided. What her gut has already decided. Pillar Two Credibility Before Persuasion

what you say. And believe does not work with the way we wish it did. We assume that if the argument is strong enough, people will accept it. The research says it's not that simple. Back in 1951, two researchers, Carl Hovland and Walter Weiss, ran one of the first controlled studies on this. They gave people the same message attributed to different sources. So it's the same message, but different sources are saying it. Some seen as trustworthy and some not. Here's the part that surprised everyone. People understood and remembered the information just as well, no matter who they thought had said it. But what changed was whether they let it move them. When the source was credible, people shifted their opinion towards the message. When the source was not, they took in the same facts and held their position. The information landed, the persuasion did not. So here's what this means for you and for your business. And it's both comfortable and freeing. In that first window, you cannot argue your way into being believed. The harder you push to convince someone who has not yet decided you are credible, the more you signal that the belief is not there. Persuasion is the thing we reach for when credibility is missing. So the work happens before the conversation. You build the credibility in advance in everything she reads and she sees so that in the moment it matters most, the question of whether to believe you has already been answered. So don't just, when you meet somebody, don't just start pitching them. Start the conversation with warmth and then connect with them, send them to your social, send them your email, and so on. And then we pitch. Pillar number three, trust compounds. It is the sum of small repeated deposits made over time. And

Pillar Three Consistency Builds Familiarity

the engine underneath that is one of the most reliable findings in all of psychology, the mere exposure effect. It was documented by Robert Zodjang in 1968. And sorry if I'm saying the names wrong, but English is my second language. The finding is almost embarrassingly simple. The more often people are exposed to something, the more they come to like it and trust it, purely from familiarity. Not because anything about it changed, simply because they have seen it before. Familiarity itself reads to the brain as safety. This is why consistency beats intensity every single time. The woman who shows up in the same voice with the same message, saying the same true things over and over is building trust with every single exposure, even on the days when it feels like nothing is happening. And it is why the opposite is so expensive. Every time you reinvent your message, you change your positioning, you go quiet for two months and come back as someone slightly different, you reset the clock. You are a stranger again. The brain has to start the familiarity work from zero. I know this is the unglamorous pillar. You were expecting that we need to trust, we need trust to come from a brilliant post, a one viral moment, a one perfect launch. But it almost never does. It comes from being the same recognizable person in the same place, saying the same clear things long enough that the market stops treating you as new. The One Move Diagnosis

your audience, your client, your leads that you understand her problem better than she understands it herself. Most marketing describes the solution. The smartest marketing describes the problem so precisely that she stops and thinks, how does she know that? That is exactly what I'm living. When you can name the thing that she has been feeling but was never able to quiet put it into words, something powerful happens. She concludes without you ever claiming it, that anyone who understands the problem this well must understand the answer to it. Look at what that one move does. You have earned warmth because she feels seen. You have earned credibility because your understanding is the proof. No argument is required, and you have given her reason to come back, which is where familiarity begins. So diagnosis is the shortcut through all three pillars at once. Go one layer deeper than she expects, and trust follows almost on its own. To simplify it, find out what is that question that she keeps on asking herself at night that keeps her up all night and talk about that. Show her that you know it before you show her the solution to it. So the whole thing in one place. Warmth first, because she decides whether you are for her before she weighs whether you are good. Rewrite Your Opening Line

the conversation. So the belief is already in place when she arrives, and consistency underneath all of it, because trust compounds with every exposure and resets every time you disappear. None of this happens on the sales call. By the time you are on the call, the trust has already been built, or it has not. Read the opening line and ask one question of it. Does it lead with you, your title, your qualifications, and your years of experience? Or does it lead with her? With the problem she is living right now, with proof that you understand exactly where she is. If it leads with you, rewrite it this week. So warmth goes in first. Name her problem in the opening line before you name a single thing about yourself. That one change moves you from answering the question she has not asked yet to answering the one she is actually asking. This is the trust architecture. Warmth, credibility, consistency, and the diagnosis that moves through all three at once. Build those on purpose and you stop hoping people trust you and start creating the conditions where they do.
